What the heck is VEJF?

Everyone always asks: "what even is Vejf" - or better yet, they butcher the name and go: "how could you name your studio Vejp?"

I won't pretend we weren't confused by it ourselves at times, because for us VEJF makes 100% sense. But for people on the outside who don't know our inside jokes and off-topic stories, VEJF sounds like some abstract entity. Or worse - like an e-cigarette.

How it all started

But before we get to the name, let's start with our story → let's go.

After finishing our first degrees - law and art history (you can guess who studied what) - Klara and I made the slightly unhinged decision to move to Belgium and try our hand at design and UX.

The plan was simple: Klara → designer, me → UX researcher. But the reality check hit faster than expected - the first year was basically a fight with code and a constant feeling of being completely lost. Over time, though, something shifted, and - fun fact - programming became something I genuinely can't imagine working without.

The funniest part is that early on, we weren't even sure we'd get along. Klara thought I was too serious and dry, and I kept wondering how one person could talk so much and crack jokes nonstop. But - turns out the whole "opposites attract" thing is real, because over time we became an inseparable duo. Almost like sisters.

And this is where VEJF begins. One day, mid-procrastination, we threw out a joke: "what if we started our own creative studio?" Even though it sounded like complete fantasy at the time (still in school, zero confidence, a million doubts), the idea had already planted itself.

In our second year, we always worked together. By the third, we'd rented a shared apartment - no. 5. And even though it was just a regular flat, for us it quickly became something more. We started calling it Studio 5, and it's where we'd spend hours talking, joking, and scheming about our own business. But talking only gets you so far - so eventually we decided that nothing would come from just talking, and… whatever - we need to take the risk. Even if it's hard, we want to do what we love, on our own terms. And that's when the question that kept us up at night appeared: "ok, but what do we call our studio?"

So... what do we call it?

The brainstorming was brutal. A full month of coming up with weird names that neither of us liked. We joked that the hardest part of building a studio was… just picking a name. What if we get bored of it? What if it's so random no one can make sense of it?

And then Klara goes: "How about VEJF?"

Me: "But what does that even mean?"

Klara: "Girl - it's 5 in Dutch (vijf), we just tweaked the spelling. Because we are → Studio 5."

That was the moment I knew - that's it.

A name that carries our experiences and memories. On one side, our time studying in Belgium, which brought us together (hence the Dutch inspiration). On the other - the number of our apartment: 5.

From that point on, VEJF wasn't just random letters anymore. It became part of our lives.

And honestly - today we can't imagine any other name, because VEJF is our core.

How we got here

Fast forward → we're here.

We have our own studio. We work with clients, take on cool projects, write code, design, and step by step we're building what we always dreamed of. We still laugh, still argue over fonts and what can (or actually can't) be done in development. We're still learning and pushing each other forward.

VEJF is more than just a name or a company to us. It's our shared space - one that grows with us.

Why we do this

Because we don't know how to do it any other way.

From the start, we knew we didn't want to half-ass things or work on projects nobody remembers. Design doesn't have to be boring, and development doesn't have to be purely technical.

For us, the most exciting things happen when aesthetics meets technology, and play intertwines with strategy. VEJF is a space where we can bring all of that together - experiment, push boundaries, and learn even from our most spectacular fuckups.

A story that continues
